Very nice Tim. I have a telescope still at my mums, I left it there when I moved out. I should bring it here really, but then I would want a better one, and it would end up costing me a fortune

It's another one of those hobbies that can get out-of-control real quick, cost-wise. There's always bigger/brighter/better just over the horizon (at least according to many.) I learned to be pretty content with smaller, more compact gear. I actually had a real beauty of a scope, a Meade ETX-125PE. Gorgeous scope, real great views, but it was like lugging a third-world country to take it out to viewing sites. I eventually gave it to my best mate, Mike, as a birthday present years ago (with the understanding he wouldn't sell it...if he no longer wanted it, he had to give it back.) Broke my heart really, but life's like that. Then I got the smaller one. It's still a bit of a chore to drag it out and set it up, but nothing near the big beast.

In the interest of full disclosure, this image isn't mine, but it's the exact make/model of the one I had.

Very nice shot Geezer

Cool looking bit of kit too

How did you deal with movement caused by the earth's rotation over the 45 seconds. Does the scopes tripod compensate for that?

For this exposure (and because of the size and relative brightness of the moon), 45 seconds doesn't really require tracking, although you're right up against the limit before the image will begin to blur without it. But yes, the ETX-80 has built-in tracking. It's a bit of a pain to set up, you need to polar align the mount, feed your location into the computer, but once it has all that it can not only find the objects you're looking for, but will also track them in the eyepiece and it's pretty dead-on accurate if properly set up.

I got confused just with my little one. Do love a bit of night sky, I'm content just watching for shooting stars though now when there's a meteor shower.

A bit too involved for me tbh.

It's actually not horrible, just takes a few minutes to get it all set up. Once you feed in your location, it will pick 3 random objects that should be in your field of view. It will get you in the neighborhood, and then you use the fine control until it's precisely centered in the viewfinder. Confirm and it goes to the next object. By the time you get all three done, it calculates where you are via triangulation of those three objects down to around 50m or so (pretty on-target given the size of the planet actually.)

Compared to polar aligning an older equatorial or German yoke mount, this is a cake walk. Old EQ's needed to be locked down, aligned along one axis with Polaris (the north star), and even then you were subject to occasional drift if you weren't spot-on.
